We often get asked about the order you should apply your skincare product in. Toner after cleanser? What about serum? And where should your sunscreen go? It can be confusing, but once you figure out the why behind the process, it’ll be much easier to remember.

Layering your skincare products in the correct order can ensure the ingredients in your products provide the most benefits they possibly can. In general, follow this simple rule: Apply thinnest consistency to thickest. Liquid to oil. You also want to think about applying the products that are most important first, so they can better penetrate into the skin (like serums) and then seal it in with emollients, like moisturizers or oils.

Without further ado, here’s a handy list to follow when it comes to your skincare routine.

  1. Cleanse

  2. Toner/Essence

  3. Treatment

    • Treatments include: Spot treatments, retinoids, acids, vitamin C, Niacinamide

  4. Serum (or mist)

  5. Eye cream

  6. Moisturizer

  7. Oil

  8. Mineral Sunscreen

    • If you’re using a physical sunscreen, it should go last. If you’re using a chemical sunscreen, apply it before your moisturizer.
